Bio Refrigerator

Bio Refrigerator

Since the invention of the refrigerators that use Freon, in 1930s, there were only a few changes and upgrades. Yes, they look different and they are very efficient, but the way they work is the same.

Luckily, the future is here. Yuriy Dmitriev, a Russian designer invented a gel-filled ‘refrigerator.’’ It looks very different than ordinary refrigerators and it works in a unique way. This appliance use gel that cools food when it is inserted into. Bio Refrigerator was one of the best inventions in the Electrolux Design Lab competition. The goal is to reduce the usage of power and pollution.

You can put this refrigerator on a wall (vertically or horizontally) or you can even hang it on a ceiling. There is no motor. It uses only gel, so 90% of the appliance is usable space. All you need to do is to put the food into this gel, that is odorless and isn’t sticky. According to its inventor, the cooling agents use luminescence (light that is generated in cold temperatures) to preserve food. Sadly, there is no more information about how this appliance really works. Maybe this appliance won’t be available ever, but it is new, interesting and very futuristic. If you know that conventional refrigerators use 8% of household energy, you can realize how important this appliance is.

Anyway, this may give the idea to other designers, so in near future we can expect many new types of refrigerators. This means that ordinary refrigerators will be finally replaced. The only problem is the price. This and similar types of technology costs a lot, or it will, when it’s become available on the market. On the other side, they could save a lot of energy every month.
